EoV Note: Presentation by Kitty Werthmann, A living survivor of Nazi-controlled Austria, on Tuesday, September 28th, 2010 at the Howard Lake High School, Howard Lake, MN.
Ms. Werthmann witnessed history during World War Two, and is now traveling the country speaking. She talks about growing up in Austria, before and after the Nazi party and Hitler took control.
And she has a warning for all Americans: She is watching history repeat itself with the current state of government in America.
Kitty Werthmann was born in Austria, and lived there for seven years under Hitler’s brutal regime. After the war, she lived another three years under the Communist occupation of the Soviets.
Needless to say, Mrs. Werthmann is someone with a uniquely qualified perspective on how the media can distort events, and tyranny takes hold. She says not only was the media wrong about how Hitler rose to power, but that “in the beginning, Hitler didn’t look like, or talk like a monster at all. He talked like an American politician.”
She says that the stories of Hitler overthrowing governments and citizens in order to come to power just simply isn’t true. The people in Austria, for instance, elected Hitler with 98% of the vote at the ballot box.
Mrs. Werthmann goes on to say that gun ownership in Austria was common. Over time, however, the government started saying the guns were dangerous and implemented gun registration. This was followed by orders to turn in their weapons in order to reduce crime. Any citizen who refused faced severe punishment.
Mrs. Werthmann says that the dictatorship, “didn’t happen over night, but it took five years, gradually, little by little, to escalate to a dictatorship.” She then goes on to say that, “When the people fear the government, that’s tyranny, but when the government fears the people, that’s liberty.”
As a Nazi survivor, this is her advice:
“Keep your guns, keep your guns, and buy more guns.”
